Why did you start your blog?
Working as a technical writer, I desperately needed a creative outlet that would also provide me with a platform for showcasing my writing. I began blogging with a partner, and when he no longer had time to contribute, I took the blog over and made it my own.
I've been keeping this blog for nearly five years, and it serves different purposes depending on my mood and on events going on around me. No less important is that it's led to a variety of professional writing opportunities that I may not have been given otherwise. It enriches my life both personally and professionally, thanks to the connections I've made.
What do you cover in your blog?
Topics run the gamut, and I'm not sure it fits neatly into one specific category. I don't have one particular focus, and will generally write about anything that somehow stirs my passions - for better or for worse. Sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, and sometimes a quirky combination of the two, with the occasional dose of cynicism thrown in for good measure...
I live in Israel, so there have been lots of posts dealing with local and regional issues - current events, politics, coexistence, etc. I've also written about reproductive issues and done a great deal of mommy blogging. I've written fairly extensively about loss and grieving. I promote causes that are important to me and I've written about music and books that have affected me. As an expat, I've written a number of posts about life in a foreign country. Lately, I've been writing a lot of poetry.
What it all boils down to, I suppose, is that this is a blog about me - my thoughts and feelings, my opinions (such as they are), my joys and frustrations, my observations about what's going on around me.
Advice
- Reach out to other bloggers by leaving comments. It's a great way to network with like-minded individuals and get your blog noticed.
- Don't ask for link exchanges. Be patient. Let your writing speak for itself and other bloggers will link to you.
- Write a lot (several times a week), at least at the beginning when you are trying to establish yourself. People get bored quickly, and if they keep coming back without seeing something new, they'll stop coming.
- Don't post links to your blog in other blogs' comment sections. If people think your comment is interesting, they'll click your name.
