USA Today Highlights White House Council on Women

According to a newly posted article at USA Today, the much-heralded White House Council on Women and Girls is:

...assessing every government agency to see if its programs do enough to benefit women. The first senior adviser on domestic violence and the first ambassador for women's issues around the globe are developing programs to prevent violence again women at home and abroad. First lady Michelle Obama is highlighting women's achievements, helping families and pushing girls to succeed.

Reporter Mimi Hall outlines some of the work the administration has done so far on behalf of women.

In one specific area, significant steps forwards have been taken. Advocates for victims of domestic violence have applauded the June 26, 2009 appointment of Lynn Rosenthal as the first White House senior adviser on violence against women. Former Executive Director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Rosenthal will provide input as the Obama administration develops policies and programs intended to reduce domestic violence and sexual assault.

Between Rosenthal and Vice President Joe Biden, who has worked long and hard to secure funds and programming to combat violence against women, it's clear that the Obama administration has the energy, the knowledge, and the expertise to push for improved domestic violence legislation.

But will we see change in other areas, especially now that President Obama is bogged down by health care reform? Perhaps the USA Today article, coming out of the blue, is an indication that something is afoot. I've been skeptical in the past but continue to believe that women's issues will advance during the course of this administration. What do you think?

Ms. Rosenthal, given her extraordinary qualifications and clear commitment to preventing domestic violence, SIA is encouraged by her appointment as White House Advisor. Her appointment signals recognition at the highest levels of government that now is the time for real change and domestic violence resource reform. Without such reform, more victims will be subject to what advocates and victims now refer to as “The DV Run Around,” and more will die. We are hopeful that the appointments lead to positive change for victims.

It is important as women that we rally behind President Obama concerning all issues that effect women. It is time that we stand up against domestic violence, lower pay and rising health care cost.
