Mommy MySpace: Online Communities & Social Networks for Moms

Wednesday December 12, 2007
What's the biggest innovation to hit mommyhood? Not the disposable diaper or the heated diaper wipe. Not a diaper bag so sweet it could go from nursery to boardroom to a night of clubbing.

It's the ability to connect to other moms through online communities and social networking sites.

Any woman with a home computer and an Internet connection is just a few keystrokes away from unlimited parenting resources and a 24/7 structure of social and emotional support. Browse through real-life tips tested by other moms, find diverse and eclectic groups to join, and do it all in your bathrobe while your baby naps. (Shoulder spit-up stains optional.)

Having had my first child 16 years ago, I'm old school and envious. Back then, social networking meant stuffing baby in a snowsuit-cum-straightjacket, going on a scavenger hunt to gather everything necessary for a trip to story hour or play group. And by the time that ugly, pastel diaper bag was finally packed, frequently baby would be sticky with spit-up, and all plans would be abandoned.

Today, social networking happens without leaving one's own home. And the most discomfort anyone might experience is baby crying in hunger after she wakes up from her nap... while Mom reads just one more post...or clicks through to one more funny story...or looks up one more new friend's profile...momentarily forgetting that childcare is part of the role of a mom.

Don't think of it as child neglect. Think of it as 'Me' time, and let me tell you, you deserve it.
