Facing Food Addiction - First Step Toward Change

Thursday October 25, 2007
Anyone who's dieted or read self-help books about weight loss can recognize the buzzwords and phrases:
      Mindful eating
Eat to live - Don't live to eat
      It's only food
One minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips
If you do what you did, you'll get what you got

Catch phrases aside, it's not about the food. It's about your attitude about the food. And if you're ready to say yes, I have a food addiction, then you're ready to change. Because you can't start the journey unless you know where to begin.

The sad thing is, most overweight women will say one &/or all of these cliché “catch phrases” at some point. They may actually say them enough to believe it themselves. And yet, they still manage to make bad food choices, not excercise enough & stay overweight. Wow! It isn’t rocket science! It’s like saying “If you stand in a rose garden all day, you’re going to smell like roses” I mean seriously! Do you really need a lame motto to say your family & friends? Do you REALLY think that they think you’re actually trying to lose weight? That you’re not going to a fast food drive-through on your way to work, at lunch, on your way home from work, after leaving a night out with friends? That you don’t choose what tastes good instead of what is ACTUALLY healthy for you? If so, they are only fooling themselves! Those “catch phrases” are for the “fools”. Those who lie to those around them, about the ACTUAL life choices they are making for themselves.
They are usually the ones who try to take the “easy way” out too. They are the most likely to have gastric or lapband. They loose 100+ lbs. then slowly put most of it back, until they are fat yet again. But don’t listen to me. I do not & will not live by some weightloss companys bought motto! I was a chubby kid, fat teen & am now clinicly obese adult. Who struggles EVERYDAY! But I refuse to take the easy way out!
I will eat my salads, baked chicken & fish, steamed vegetables w/o salt or butter. All while watching my skinny friends eat whatever they want. I will workout everyday at least 1hr 30mins. everyday! I will force myself to do it the right way! The healthy way! No copouts from this lady! I got myself here, I’ll be damned if I don’t get MYSELF back! That will be my own personal conquest!

I believe that losing weight is like giving up smoking, it needs total commitment. I have done both and I did use a catch phrase but it was my own catch phrase. When I was giving up smoking when
the craving started I would tell myself “dirty, dirty, dirty”. This brought to my mind images of full ashtrays, dropped ash on the floor or on my clothes, the smell of stale cigarettes etc. this really did help me get through the bad times.
When I lost weight I would long for things that weren’t good for me and I would simply think about the fat in my veins and arteries, slowly blocking them until I lost a leg or had a heart attack.
It doesn’t really matter how you lose weight or give up smoking. If a catch phrase works for you and it means the difference of success or failure then, I say go for it and good luck to you.
