After 400 children were removed from the Yearning For Zion ranch, images of the women of the polygamist sect began to appear. These tearful, plainly-dressed mothers in long skirts and old-fashioned upswept hair had lived in relative isolation inside the compound prior to the raid. Now the center of attention, they tried to cope with a mainstream culture they'd had little exposure to, while the rest of us pondered the curious habits of polygamists and the lives of their wives, so different from our own.
