What is John McCain's position on equal pay for equal work?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What is John McCain's position on equal pay for equal work?
Answer: John McCain has gone on record as saying, "I'm committed to making sure that there's equal pay for equal work. That there is equal opportunity in every aspect of our society. And that is my record and you can count on it."

Yet he has also publicly stated that he is opposed to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which sought to overturn the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The case was brought to court by Lilly Ledbetter, who claimed she was being paid less for her work because she was a woman (almost $225,000 less over her 19-year career.) The majority of justices voted against the case, stating she had waited too long to sue. The Fair Pay Act, which McCain opposes, would provide workers with a reasonable time frame in which to file a claim.

In April 2008, McCain explained why he does not support the bill, stating, "I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation...opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems. This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."
