Pregnant Man Discharged From Hospital After Birth of His Daughter

Thursday July 3, 2008
Thomas Beatie, better known as the Pregnant Man, gave birth to a baby girl this past Sunday. He has left the hospital and is resting at home with his infant daughter, ABC News reported an hour ago.

Beatie was born female but legally changed his gender to male after undergoing hormone treatment and surgery to remove his breasts. He and his wife Nancy lived quietly in a small town in Oregon, and neighbors were unaware that he was a trangender male until he announced his pregnancy and subsequently appeared on Oprah to share his unique story.

"Baby Borrowers" Mom Tells Her Behind-the-Scenes Story About 'Loaning' Her Baby

Wednesday July 2, 2008
Three decades ago, in 1978 the documentary Scared Straight followed a group of youthful offenders as they were taken to Rahway State Prison and given a taste of the harsh realities of life behind bars.

The new NBC reality showThe Baby Borrowers may be to pregnancy what Scared Straight was to crime. The show is an attempt to educate teens on exactly what's involved in becoming pregnant, giving birth, caring for a baby, raising a family...you get the drift.

In episode one - and again tonight in episode two - real parents 'loan' their babies to the show's teen couples for 3 days straight. Last week I was incredibly anxious about how the babies were being cared not being cared for by the teen couples, and I wrote about it in Children at Risk? “The Baby Borrowers” Uncomfortable to Watch

I was wrong, and I now know this because I've since been in touch with Julie Sullivan, one of the moms on the show. She and her husband 'loaned' their infant son Shay to the teenage parenting reality show. In an exclusive interview Julie told me:

Everyone leaves their child with a care provider at some point. We felt better about this than leaving our other children when they were young with a trusted sitter when we went out of town.
Julie says it was "an awesome experience" and explains exactly what went on behind the scenes at The Baby Borrowers. No spoilers for tonight's show, but a lot of interesting tidbits about what we did see and what we didn't see.

I was glad to hear that her son Shay was the 'baby' of teen couple Jordan and Sasha, who seem to be the most responsible and considerate pair on the show. Jordan won my heart when he told his 'pregnant' girlfiend Sasha to take a nap while he put together the crib and set up the baby's room. What a guy.

Both episodes air tonight, so if you missed The Baby Borrowers last week, the first one repeats begining at 8 pm Eastern.
