Anyone who owns an iPhone has heard the pitch, "This is THE must-have app!" but in this case it's no idle boast.
If you're a female of any age, you need to download the free app Circle of 6. With Circle of 6, you're two quick taps away from getting help if you find yourself threatened with sexual assault or abuse.
Designed specifically for college students, Circle of 6 is a sexual violence prevention app that enables you to choose 6 friends/close contacts whom you can call on in an emergency.
Once you set up your Circle of 6, the app opens to a screen that enables you to ask your circle to:
- come and get you (it also uses GPS to locate you and instantly send a Google Maps link to your location)
- call you to interrupt a tense situation and provide a graceful exit
- be aware that you're confused about a relationship and are seeking help through LoveIsRespect.org (a website that promotes health relationships).
The app also includes direct dialing options to two national hotlines and a third in which you can plug in campus police, local rape crisis, or other numbers.
Circle of 6 is the winner of the White House Apps Against Abuse Technology Challenge and has been described by anti-violence champion Vice President Joe Biden as "a new line of defense against violence" for young people.
If you have daughters or other relatives or friends of high school or college age, urge them to get this free app available through the iTunes store. In fact, any woman of any age can benefit from having a Circle of 6 she can turn to.
Consider sharing this through social media -- tweet it, post it on your Facebook page -- just do whatever it takes to alert everyone you know that Circle of 6 exists and that it's free. If you can help prevent rape or sexual assault before it occurs, what's stopping you from downloading it this app and spreading the word?
