That's why Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor had to divest herself of all memberships in organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, nationality, gender, or religion. On Friday, June 19, she announced her resignation from the Belizean Grove, a professional women's club of about 115 influential members who are all female.
Although Sotomayor claims that the Belizean Grove includes men in many of its activities, it was a little too gender exclusive for some senators who questioned her involvement last week. To avoid any suggestion that her membership might violate judicial ethics, Sotomayor quit the club.
The nominee, who has already come under fire for her infamous "wise Latina" comments in the past, has been moving forward with her visits on Capitol Hill as she attempts to win over those senators who will oversee her senate confirmation hearings later this year.
