Senators' Uneasiness with Sotomayor's All-Female Club Membership Prompts Her to Quit

By June 23, 2009

In the past, some may have accused the Supreme Court of functioning as an all-men's club for more years than it should have, but nowadays, exclusivity is frowned upon.

That's why Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor had to divest herself of all memberships in organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, nationality, gender, or religion. On Friday, June 19, she announced her resignation from the Belizean Grove, a professional women's club of about 115 influential members who are all female.

Although Sotomayor claims that the Belizean Grove includes men in many of its activities, it was a little too gender exclusive for some senators who questioned her involvement last week. To avoid any suggestion that her membership might violate judicial ethics, Sotomayor quit the club.

The nominee, who has already come under fire for her infamous "wise Latina" comments in the past, has been moving forward with her visits on Capitol Hill as she attempts to win over those senators who will oversee her senate confirmation hearings later this year.

I am curious. Has anyone looked into the clubs that the males on the Supreme Court belong to?

I highly doubt any hiatus is actually anything but a retooling for ratings. I actually heard a bit of some entertainment news program – it was late, I was writing, the TV was on as noise in the background – with one of the female talking heads saying to the other equally blonde mouthpiece, “This is what great reality TV is all about.”

Face it, the American public would not only watch, but eagerly participate in a reality show based on Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.”

sorry… wrong topic… wondered where it went.

but on-topic, this is an interesting case of Political Correctness gone wild. Kind of equivalent to making sure everyone gets a valentine in kindergarten and nobody get left out of kickball.

Then again, why do some white men always get nervous when darker people and women gather in groups whispering out of their earshot… there ought to be a law… wait, oh yes, there used to be a bunch, now didn’t there.
