Lobbyists and feminists, take note -- there's a simple way to get politicians to vote in support of so-called 'liberal' policies that promote gender equity. Make sure they have daughters instead of sons.
Daughters Turn Parents into Feminists
According to this post from a Columbia University website, a series of studies by sociologist Rebecca Warner and economist Ebonya Washington reveal a link between the gender of an individual's children and the attitudes and actions of the parent, especially when that individual is male. An initial survey indicated that those who parent only daughters are more likely to have views that could be described as feminist.
Washington later collected data on the voting records of US congressmen and found that those with daughters tended to vote liberally on reproductive rights issues such as teenage access to contraception, as well as broader issues that impact females such as flexibility for working families and tax-free education.
The Power of 'Daddy's Little Girl'
Getting more women in Congress has been the goal of those who want to see more family-friendly and female-centric policy changes. There was also excitement when Obama created the White House Council on Women and Girls.
But until women politicians are seated in the same numbers as men, perhaps we should follow the birth announcements of male policymakers with the same attention we give to gender equity legislation. Because their female offspring may be the ones to exert the greatest influence and quietly pave the way for all women...by 'capturing Daddy's heart' and inspiring him to do what's right for all our daughters.
