What a difference a month makes. Especially the last two weeks.
Nadya Suleman is - for better or worse - a strange, twisted figure in the pop culture landscape. On her good days she's a poor woman's Angelina Jolie; on her bad days Morticia Addams (as played by Angelica Huston) driving a minivan packed with more kiddie car seats than Babies R Us, with her dad Ed Doud standing in as Uncle Fester.
But she got what she wanted. Our attention. And her name on everybody's lips. Even if she were to magically disappear tomorrow, chances are that she'll end up in Webster's or the Oxford English Dictionary under the heading "octomom," sealing her fame (for all intents and purposes) in perpetuity.
For now, we marvel at her, mock her, and a few even sympathize with her.
She is the modern day woman in a shoe who had so many children she didn't know what to do.
No, strike that. She knew exactly what she wanted to do:
- Get her own reality show like the Gosselin family of Jon & Kate Plus 8.
- Sell photos of her preemies for money.
- Charge media outlets for interviews and access to her home so she could be the world's most famous mother.
Here's media coverage over a two week span, from February 24 through March 10, 2009. The articles, audio and video clips include a frantic 911 call made by Suleman as she repeatedly says, "I'm going to kill myself," a fight between Suleman and her mother on-camera, a segment from a Dr. Phil interview, Suleman's on-again off-again interest in free childcare provided by Angels in Waiting, and photos of the new house that she'll be moving into shortly.
