First Impressions of Oprah's Interview With Octuplet Grandpa Ed Doud

Tuesday February 24, 2009
When octuplet grandpa Ed Doud contacted the Oprah show, he wanted to set the record straight and correct the public's misunderstanding of his daughter's recent statements and her situation. Today's broadcast of his interview with Oprah revealed the depth of his resentment regarding the NBC/Ann Curry interview.

Doud complained that NBC took a tired and medicated Nadya out of the hospital and sequestered her in an undisclosed location where she was questioned at length while she was under duress. He argues that her answers don't reflect who she is or what her real thoughts are about her childhood and her relationship with her parents.

NBC has denied Doud's claims, stating that Nadya never left the hospital during the interview.

Oprah was even-handed during the interview but insistent; she put Doud on the spot several times questioning his daughter's mental health.

The hour-long show also included a pre-taped segment with an infertility doctor, who stated that 44,000 babies are born each year thanks to IVF. Due to her age and health, Nadya Suleman should not have had more than two embryos implanted at once.

Also in the studio with Oprah was Dr. Mehmet Oz who pointed out that the likelihood of all eight babies growing up normally is very small. At the very least, they'll experience developmental delays, and some might have cerebral palsy among other possible disabilities.

In conclusion, Oprah asked Ed Doud two questions: What is your greatest fear? And what is your greatest hope?

Doud's answers, as best as I could transcribe them live blogging: "I'm a survivor. If I were just alone by myself and went through bankruptcy, that's all right. But the way it is now I have to work harder, I have to make sure I can provide and protect my family... so therefore I need to keep working. Anything happens to me - that's my greatest fear."

Greatest hope? "The mother to finish her degree, the children to grow up healthy, and others to support this family."
