Sexual Harassment At Chili's - Two Days Before Christmas, Employee Firing Reversed By Sister's Support

Wednesday December 24, 2008
When Rebekah Spicuglia heard that her sister Rachel - a five-year employee of Chili's restaurant chain who had filed a sexual harassment complaint against a Chili's in Kennesaw, GA with the EEOC - had been fired two weeks before Christmas, she didn't get mad.

Instead, she sought justice.

She wrote an article about her sister's plight, noting how Rachel had reported the escalating harassment to multiple supervisors but had been ignored for ten months.

Rebekah's article appeared in yesterday's Huffington Post on the front page of the website. And by the end of the workday Rachel learned that Chili's parent company, Brinker International, said the termination was a computer error and that she had been reinstated.

What an extraordinary gift from one sister to another. No present under any Christmas tree tomorrow could possibly equal that one great gift.

Yes, Rebekah, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist...and this year, you are the manifestation of that spirit. You've proven that you can fight city hall, or Chili's, or any entity that doesn't do right by you or someone you love, as long as you have the courage of your convictions and the belief that change is possible.

I'm sharing your story in the hope that it will inspire someone else - another sister or mother, friend or co-worker - to step forward on behalf of another woman and fight the good fight. Maybe not today or tomorrow. But sometime in the new year ahead.

We can all move mountains. The impossible begins with a little push.

Merry Christmas to all. And to all, a good fight.
