Elizabeth Edwards and What Might Have Been

Monday November 3, 2008

On the battleground of women's rights and women's issues, the field is littered with casualties as Hillary Clinton supporters look warily at Sarah Palin voters across a contentious divide on this day before Election Day.

Could two opposing sides ever come together under one fantasy candidate? I think so.

And that woman would be Elizabeth Edwards.

She's striking out on her own now, and observers will note that she's not wearing a wedding ring. Last week, Ceci Connolly and the Washington Post dedicated three pages to Ms. Edwards and her passions, especially healthcare.

I wish her health were not so shaky. I wish she hadn't had to suffer through the indignities she did. I wish that she could consider a political career of her own. Because I think she's got what it takes, and there's not a woman in America who doesn't respect her.

I can take or leave John Edwards. But I miss Elizabeth, and wonder what might have been if it had been her fate to be in the position of Michelle Obama or Sarah Palin on the eve of this election.
