Women's Issues on a Global Scale - The Candidates' Positions

Sunday November 2, 2008
The world watches intently as the United States elects a president.

It's not just idle curiosity. Our nation's foreign policies have enormous impact internationally.

There's constant reference made to each candidate's experience in this area. But there's virtually no examination of the implication of their policy views on women's issues globally. What are their positions on reproductive rights outside the US, women workers and international trade, the horrific conflict in Darfur, and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Girl with Pen, a website bridging feminist research with popular reality, graded each candidate on their work in international issues that affect women. As Gwendolyn Beetham, one of the co-authors of the article "Global Exchange: Election Day Special" writes:

I don’t know how many of my friends...from around the world have told me that they wish they could vote in this year’s election, not least because White House policies very much affect women around the world.
American women hold so much power. Think of what we can do with one single vote. Shouldn't we exercise that power armed with all the knowledge available to us, not only to do what's right for us but for the rest of the world?
