Sarah Get Your Gun...With the Help of Photoshop

Friday September 12, 2008
Stand in the checkout line at any grocery store and you'll undoubtedly stare at magazine covers adorned with women's smiling faces staring back at you.

Sarah Palin is now on several of those covers. Those are legitimate photos published by major media outlets.

The fake covers circulating on the internet are obvious in their clumsiness, with lighting, skin tone, hair, etc. not quite matching. At least it's obvious to me thanks to my resident Photoshop expert - my 14-year-old daughter.

But apparently many people are fooled.

The creator of one of the most popular fake images - Palin on the cover of Vogue - wrote a post on his blog about it, appropriately entitled "If I had a dime every time..."; he even goes so far as to show us his stats as viewers surfed in looking for Palin photos shortly after she was named VP.

We appear to love our fake photos. As David Emery - my colleague who writes about Urban Legends - observed in a post yesterday, "The Revolution Will Be Photoshopped."

(I guess this means I should encourage my daughter in her love of image manipulation technology.)
