Enough with the Beauty Queen Already! There's More to Sarah Palin

Saturday August 30, 2008
My online pal Tanja Cilia who blogs for the Times of Malta knew I had my nose to the grindstone. I was busy compiling a profile on Sarah Palin, McCain's choice for the Republican VP slot, just hours after the announcement was made. So she kept sending me links to what she was picking up overseas: Just like me, she's irritated by the headlines and the tone of the coverage:
Why are they making such a song and dance about the fact that she was a beauty queen...coldest state, hottest governor is silly anyway. Sexist. They are calling her his Hail Mary Pass.... My point is they would never have said this about a MAN. Joe Biden was focused upon for other things.
I realize some people are saying that McCain picked her primarily because she's young and she's eye candy. But she also ran for governor of Alaska as an outsider who was bent on reform and change, and that's why she got elected. Like McCain at his best moments, she can be a political maverick.

Yes, she's a conservative Christian and is pro-life. But for women who believe in life at conception, she's the first female candidate on a presidential ticket that they've had the chance to rally around. Truth be told, Palin expresses what many women in middle America feel.

Conservative women deserve a candidate who reflects their views as much as the next person in line voting. Let the American public vote based on her record and her stand on the issues.

Don't make fun of her because she took part in a beauty pageant. Some women join the military to earn money for college while others enroll in contests for regional and state titles. Like abortion or birth, it's a personal choice.

There's more to Sarah Palin than her appearance. Focusing on her looks is like picking low-hanging fruit. Let's move beyond the obvious and get down to what she may or may not offer as a candidate.

Thank you!!! I was just talking to friends last night, and we were saying how sick we were of all the sexist coverage of Palin. The media is going to focus on all of the irrelevant points, just as they did with Hillary Clinton.

Let’s instead focus on the fact that she’s an opponent of a woman’s right to choose, the environment, animals, and the LGBT community.

Yet… if she were a man with the same background… would you really believe there would be anyway HE would have been selected?

It might not be appropriate to make fun of her past participation in beauty pageants, but it is entirely appropriate to question whether capitalizing her youth and appearance is a part of John McCain’s strategy. I think John McCain WANTED to see headlines like this – it reflects how a lot of his male voters think about women and I’m sure he doesn’t want to disappoint them. I seriously doubt anyone from McCain’s camp will complain about headlines like these. Republicans may be willing to nominate a woman, but that doesn’t mean that at least some of them don’t share the mentality behind these headlines.

I know you are concerned women, the fact that you formed this group attests to that. I want to implore you not to make this a single-issue campaign by advocating Palin merely because she is a woman. For all her positive attributes, she is woefully unqualified to step in as commander in chief if necessary.

For me, this is the bottom line:

Because of his advanced age, there is a very real chance that McCain could be stricken by a disabling medical condition or, God forbid, even die in office.

Who would then be commander in chief and in charge of national security? A totally unknown and untested political rookie with no national security or foreign policy experience, a young woman who was selected by the president, not by anyone’s vote.

It’s utter insanity. And as dangerous as it gets.

Palin is a slightly better VP pick than Dan Quayle was. That takes care of the gender equality and fairness part. Like Quayle she will be eaten alive by the media. Why not Kate Bailey Hutchinson if McCain wanted a woman? Is McCain that desperate?

Palin being a woman has nothing to do with my support for her. I like her conservatism and her record speaks for itself. And as far as her being “woefully unqualified”, what qualifies a junior senator to be the commander in chief?

Addressing Palin as a sexual issue is entirely appropriate, since McCain is using her solely as an attempt to woo disappointed
Hillary supporters. And since their social and political ideas could not be farther apart, the only groumd for comparison or identification is sex. QED

“her conservatism and her record…”

Does that include positions on abstinence-only education over birth control information for teens?

Isn’t it wonderful to be so “right” on all the issues.

I love the fact that Mrs. Palin is a PROVEN reformer and a “straight shooter” on issues. She is knows who she is, what she believes, and is a courageous leader. I can do without arrogant attitudes. She seems to understand “middle America” very well and what is important to us. I thank God for Mrs. Palin and pray for her protection from those who want to hurt her and her family.

I think McCain WANTS to lose this election. How can this woman focus on our country when her own backyard is in dire need of attention? If she even thought about her kids, she would have KNOWN that the media would exploit their weaknesses, and she would have declined the opportunity to run. HMMMM…Mother of the Year material? I think NOT!!!! Thanks, John. Barak is our man anyhow!

She is a mother first. Her 17yr old daughter had problems. She thought is was best to throw her daughter under the bus to futher her polical ambitions. that just makes me sick. I was going to vote for Mccain. I will not vote at all. Her one jobe in life is to protect her children!!!!!!

What about her education? How many people are considered for the Presidency or VP who only have a BA in Journalism from the University of Idaho> That is the sum total of this lady’s education. Not someone I want running my country.

(13) Judith DiGennaro says:

Surely you are not comparing a woman who thinks she is knowledgeable about Russia because she can see it across the Bering Straits to Hillary Clinton? Her candidacy was an insult to conservatives. Talk about playing the gender card! No matter how incompetent or inept her performance, if anyone criticized her we were criticizing her because she is a woman and “former beauty queen”. That way we were all precluded from legitimate comment. Slick move. That is the equivalent of the Republican’s running of Alan Keyes in Illinois against Obama in the Senate race. I have experienced and litigated more than my share of gender-based discrimination in my time. The Republicans have become the party
of sour grapes looking for excuses instead of productive ideas.
