What Hillary Clinton Left Out of Her 'Nearly Perfect' Speech to the Democratic Convention

Thursday August 28, 2008
In her commentary on Hillary Clinton's address at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, Adele M. Stan calls it just short of "a nearly perfect speech."

Writing for the Women's Media Center, Stan observes:

On the 88th anniversary of the 19th amendment—the one that grants women the right to vote—Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first woman to come within striking distance of a major-party presidential nomination, delivered a speech steeped in feminist history that implored her supporters to embrace the candidacy of Barack Obama.

She was introduced by way of a video tribute to her, narrated by her daughter, Chelsea. The piece emphasized the historic nature of Clinton's candidacy, and her own native feminism...The best joke in the piece was the text placed under a video clip of former President Bill Clinton talking about Hillary: it simply read "Hillary's husband"—no mention of his name.

Taking the podium, Clinton cut right to the chase, introducing herself as "a proud supporter of Barack Obama."...Her speech was smartly crafted and beautifully delivered....[and] conveyed the complex dynamics of the 2008 presidential race. Clinton lauded Michelle Obama, saying that the younger woman had proven with her Monday-night speech that "she will make a great first lady for America." She applauded the selection of Joe Biden as Barack Obama's running mate, calling Biden "wise," "pragmatic" and "a good man." Even John McCain, while having his policies repudiated, was named by Clinton as "my friend."

So what was it in Hillary's speech that prompted Stan to find it just short of 'nearly' perfect? What error in judgment did Hillary make in Stan's opinion? A fairly big one; and if you read Stan's piece, you may agree as well.

I like responding to your short to the point articles, thanks.
Ms Hillary, well, what can I say. A woman has to do what a woman has to do, I guess.
As the commentators stated, she said a lot of fine words, words, words. And, I say No real substance, just like Nobama.
And now for Bill, same thing

Democrats are making a conscious effort, excruciating in its transparency, not once to mention Obama’s blackness, brownness, bronzness or any other kind of unwhiteness for fear of stoking the twin bigotries that are really the only reason he’s tied with John McNullity at this point, as opposed to carrying every state but Utah: his skin color and his perceived foreignness. The experience thing is a canard, the last two presidents, both of whom served eight years each, having had no more experience in foreign policy going in than your average tourist, and one of whom, after eight years in office, still seems to have no idea that the world isn’t an extended precinct of the Texas highway patrol.

The Democrats are terrorized by the notion that Americans will become too aware of Obama’s race, for good reason: We’re still at heart a racist nation, and the 2008 vote will be a referendum on the extent to which we are. I wouldn’t be surprised if the real book the Obamas are reading, when they’re not pretending to read the Bible or hiding in the bathroom to read “The Idiot’s Guide to Sounding Republican,” is “The Human Stain.”

I read her speech and I think it was wonderful, not “almost”. I think she said what needed to be said. I feel that she was speaking to all Americans, to those that supported her and need to move on to support Obama. There are those that are angry and just for spite would vote the wrong way. I also think she did not go into race because it should not be an issue and there are those that fear race. Making Obama’s nomination about race is not productive in getting Americans to vote for him. Making him appealing to all people by his beliefs is.

sorry but i am sick of the nitpicking of the clintons and her speech was wonderful and let’s do remember the messiah obama said some real nasty things of his own–starting back in october when he called her ‘bush-cheney lite’…obama needs to do something besides be a petty winner

Am I the only person who was watching the network that kept cutting to the face of Michelle Obama in the audience during this speech of Hillary’s and saw the look of pure envy and sometime’s even hatred on her face?

Hillary Clinton’s speech was beyond perfect.
She had everything covered.

Am not surprised some would still be able to come up with negative comments.Hillary Clinton did her part. It’s up to Obama to support that with his campaign to prove to America’s 18million voters he’s just as good as Hillary Clinton & he deserves to be the Democratic nominee.
Hillary Clinton has an overwhelmingly impressive history as a First Lady & as a senator.

More power to the Clintons!

I don’t agree with Stan referring to Hillary Clinton’s speech as “nearly perfect”….because she failed to remind America that he is the first African-American figure in major politics. Why is race always an issue?

Hillary Clinton did not get as much support as Obama from the super delegates, they didn’t see her being able to beat McCain & they say it has nothing to do with her being a woman.

Considering the above,it’s about time Obama proves himself to the American people he can beat McCain, hopefully not because he’s the first African-American presidential nominee but because he’s capable of effectively leading our country.
