Clinton's Comments at Women For Obama Breakfast in New York City

Thursday July 10, 2008
I just saw Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama speak live from the Women for Obama fundraising breakfast taking place right now in New York City. Where was this version of Clinton during the campaign? Warm, funny, and clearly relaxed, she said Obama told her she looked rested. Her response? She's taken up regular exercise, which she knows has benefits but was something she hadn't had time for during the campaign. While Obama got up every morning and worked out, she explained she was "having her hair done." The difference was, in her words, "a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers" kind of thing.

Clinton also talked about the women who worked in the Hilton hotel where the breakfast was served, women who awoke at 4 am so they could arrive on time to set up the meal, women who locked their children behind apartment doors or brought them to daycare, hoping that they would be safe. She pointed out the fact that equal pay for equal work has been on the books for years, but women have yet to enjoy that benefit. She mentioned the need to maintain a woman's reproductive rights and her ability to choose.

With obvious heart and passion, she reiterated - as she has before - that the women who voted for her should be voting for Obama because the differences between them are minuscule; that we need a Democrat in the White House. Anyone who doubts her support of Obama should hear and see her speech this morning. CNN carried a large part of her remarks live. In comparison, they showed only a small portion of Obama's address to the crowd. He was good, but Clinton appeared to own the room this morning.
