Spitzer Scandal Sparks Debate Over Prostitution
The one positive thing that's come out of this difficult week is that we're engaging in a meaningful dialogue about prostitution and seriously questioning whether or not it is a 'victimless crime.'
Some good minds have focused on this topic, presenting information that should put to rest the idea that women willingly choose sex work.
Rachel Sklar at the Huffington Post shines a light into the shadowy world of escort services with "The Sex Workers Speak: True-Life Tales of the World's Oldest Profession."
Nicholas Kristof, writing for the New York Times, tells why he's changed his mind about legalizing prostitution after looking at the experiences of other countries.
We expect substantive discussions at Huffpo and NYT, but Glamour magazine? That glossy hair/makeup/fashion rag? Yep.
They've got six young women writing about political events on their Glamocracy blog. It's mostly about the presidential election, but this week's scandal was too juicy for them to pass up.
Glamocracy blogger Megan Carpenter goes totally nuts in a post entitled "Eliot Spitzer Is a Big, Fat Pig (and a Hypocrite, Too)" on Monday, but calms down enough by Friday to compose the "Top Ten Reasons We Need More Female Politicians." (Megan, you are so right about reason #1.)
On Fridays I usually try to present voices (other than my own) sharing opinions that make us all think. If you come across an interesting women's issue written from a female perspective, send me a link and I'll try to include it here next Friday.
