"Graciously Submit" to This: Mike Huckabee's View of Women

Friday December 14, 2007
Ah, to be female in the Republican Party, where the men running for President can't seem to agree on How To Treat a Lady:

You can guess the former two. But the latter is Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister who has traditional views on the role of women at home and on the battlefield. (And if you're keeping score: Home yes, Battlefield no.)

Submission or Lust?

Is this "graciously submit" statement a make or break for you? Could you live with a president who feels this way in his heart of hearts? We lived with President Jimmy Carter, a man honest about the lust in his heart - and he too was a Southern Baptist during his time in the White House.

In fact, this 'wives graciously submitting to their husbands' thing so irked Carter that in October 2000 he sent a letter to the Southern Baptist Convention stating he was leaving the faith because of this very same issue.

The Convention's rigidity and attitude toward women, Carter wrote:

...violate the basic premises of my Christian faith....I personally feel the Bible says all people are equal in the eyes of God. I personally feel that women should play an absolutely equal role in service of Christ in the church.

Oh, Jimmy, we hardly knew yer lustful yet gender-equitable heart back in the day.

I (Don't) Heart Huckabee

If things don't get more X-chromosome friendly within the GOP soon, I'm gonna buy some old Carter campaign pins on eBay, start wearing them and get a "Draft Carter" movement off the ground.

Because, Mr. Huckabee - following President Carter's fine example of standing up for one's own beliefs - I'm going to delicately suggest where you might 'graciously submit' yourself to...and it isn't the White House.

“Graciously” submit to a husband?

NO THANK YOU!

We all submit ourselves to many things and people in our lives. That men can submit themselves in so many ways to their families but some wives can’t feel submissive to anyone, even their husbands (who they are supposed to have chosen well) doesn’t say a lot about those wives. What is it the husband you picked so carefully asking you to do that you find so horrific?

That this is another instance of the government invading American bedrooms.
Logically the situation between the spouses may have changed over the years- no matter how carefully chosen, you never really know someone until you live with them full time.
Dead beat dads were also carefully chosen- and that is a disaster .
Logically I may chose to submit but be ordered ? No. Its not my religion trying to force secondary status once more . I will not have this power over enforced from the executive branch of another religion in my home. I am responsible and ethical on my own.

“I may chose (sic) to submit but be ordered to”? No ones even mentioning laws, it’s a religious/social matter, and we have religious freedom, including Huckabee.
Marriages are not failing in disturbing percentages because of careful examination, couples seeing eye to eye on major issues and choosing spouses who will love their own children enough to take care of them. Ego is probably one of the largest, and if submission to people who love you is the way you determine if you do or do not have secondary status in life, then I think my point is made. Glad I didn’t bring up something as forbidden as chastity. uh oh…

Mr. Huckabee has surely shot himself in the foot with his chauvinistic statement. With or without a retraction…he has lost the race. Don’t fret ladies…you will not see a President Huckabee in the White House! He has only assured his residence in the Dog House! :)

And just a side comment, the word submission; being understood as “obedience” here, has no place in a marriage…for either partner. Husband and wife are a team…if not, you do not have a happy, and fulfilling marriage. One person cannot thrive under the thumb of another. :)

Huckabee is right on this issue. The Bible says that women are to submit to the leadership of their husbands. So, as a Christian, I am to do what the Bible says. Right on Huckabee!

I DONT WANT THIS GUY FOR PRESIDENT!!!
He really freaks me out…

Why the HECK should the wife ‘graciously submit’ to her husband? WHY?? In a marriage, wouldn’t it be best if they both were a TEAM, as Liz mentioned? Shouldn’t they be reaching decisions TOGETHER?

I don’t want this guy or anyone else invading my private life!!!

the bible is male-dominated, sick and depraved, anti-family, and UNTRUE!

no one should use their religious opinions as a platform for running for office.

(no, I’m not an atheist.)

God be gracious to all you ladies who find it hard to believe it is for our benefit that we submit to our husbands-I like Gov. Huckabee, he says what is RIGHT from the Word of God even if everyone around thinks it is wrong! Unlike those sweet mouthed candidates who are on record changing their stand every so often coz they couldn’t even remember what side they took earlier…
Where do you think our nation’s founders based the current laws that stealing isn’t right? that killing isn’t right? It’s all from the Word of God!!! Remeber?
